I’ve been following Fat Shaming Week over at Return of Kings. Pickup artists hate obesity because it means fewer thin, desirable girls to pursue.
I travel around this great land of ours and while fatness is more common some places than others, it is widespread. Obesity isn’t just a problem in itself, it’s a symptom of a deeper problem.
Fatness is a reflection of the American desire to enjoy and obey without the need for critical thinking on a personal level. The truth is your fellow Americans are not an inspiring bunch. It’s not that they are stupid, it’s that they have a fairly limited desire to think. And they really don’t need to. They are provided for- not well provided for, because just as the food they are provided with makes them fat and sick, the goods they are provided with are junk and the entertainment they are provided with is mind-numbing and nihilistic. But in the moment, in the short-term, they feel sated, and the satiation makes them feel torpid.
The lesson that western social democracies took from the 1930’s was that hungry, frustrated people are dangerous, and the masses must be kept comfortable above all. In Europe this has taken the form of extensive welfare programs. In the US, only the poor get welfare, but the people in charge make sure people have a lot of cheap food, consumer goods and entertainment.
The system is OK in some places, more stressed in others, and falling apart in a few. The US has lost its ability to provide widespread employment and adequate wages, but still provides very cheap goods, so even the poor are taken care of. Paradoxically, the poor are better off than the lower end of the employed class. Southern Europe is highly stressed, and in Greece the system is completely broken.
The West is fat. Whether the individual in question is a pig, most people and the culture as whole suffers from mental and spiritual obesity. Obese people sicken and die, and an obese culture must follow suit.
Will “lean” times eventually lead to a “lean” culture? It would be a long and painful process but it seems to be inevitable.
