Megan McArdle writes libertarian-skeptic commentaries of the continuing crack-up, and here she quotes honorary polar bear and Latino Jew Matt Yglesias on the easy choices of health care. (You protest, Matt, that you’re not one of them but on a dark street it doesn’t matter. Anti-racist pardo George Zimmerman is finding out it doesn’t even matter in a brightly-lit interrogation room or courtroom.)
Yglesias thinks immigration is an “easy” choice. I don’t think that will go so well; mainstream conservatives in Congress got the full heat of their voters when Bush tried it six years ago, although maybe they are ripe to be rolled now by Obama.
The deeper undercurrent of this though is that now government is largely involved in moving money from white to black and brown. This hasn’t been so much the case in the past, as government programs such as Medicare and Social Security largely benefited middle-class whites. The system made it clear to get their benefits, whites would have to accept this, but even welfare, affirmative action, and goverment employment didn’t add up to an unbearable burden.
Obamacare on the other hand increases insurance costs for people with jobs and health insurance to transfer money to people who don’t. Health insurance premiums are a huge amount of money. Rationalizing that immigration helps is even more crazy, because people know the cost that isn’t accounted for.
The presidential election made this pretty clear, and this racial conflict is going to become more overt as Obama gets more arrogant and hubristic.
