At VDare They Notice “The American Conservative” is F***ing Retarded

A few years ago I was in a bookstore reading an issue of “The American Conservative”, a paleoconservative magazine started in reaction to neoconservatism or National Review or both. There was a glowing review of a book tearing apart Hubert Humphrey for his anti-communist activities. Paleoconservatives adhere strongly to the idea that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, so they like Islamic fascism among other things.

VDare now notices that paleoconservatives are happy to see American destroyed by immigration. But why wouldn’t they be? Paleoconservatives hate the same things leftists hate, and for almost the same reasons.

About thrasymachus33308

I like fast cars, fast women and southern-fried rock. I have an ongoing beef with George Orwell. I take my name from a character in Plato's "Republic" who was exasperated with the kind of turgid BS that passed for deep thought and political discourse in that time and place, just as I am today. The character, whose name means "fierce fighter" was based on a real person but nobody knows for sure what his actual political beliefs were. I take my pseudonym from a character in an Adam Sandler song who was a obnoxious jerk who pissed off everybody.

The enemy of ones enemy is not necessarily ones friend.

  2. Matthew says:

From the AmCon piece: “And in the end, this result is one which will lead many dissident conservatives to make their peace with multiculturalism.”

Who wants to constant be investigated on suspicion of being a “racist” or “religious bigot ?” Even worse, you might just be ignored by everyone who matters-the fate of the Chronicles group. The temptation to surrender must be very great.

Being a conservative who isn’t just a leftist in disguise is very hard- just ask Paul Gottfried.

Not surprising – the American “Conservative” has been leftist for years. For example, look at their discussion on who they’d vote for:

    1) how much time they spend talking about boilerplate liberal issues (like civil liberties and the war on Iran that will never happen).

    2) Noah Millman calls Gary Johnson’s economic ideas “catastrophic” – er, how conservative are you, then?

    3) Gay marriage is only mentioned twice – sort of odd for a conservative voting symposium, surely? Indeed, the prehistoric issue of “Iraq” is mentioned five times, but the very current and very topical “gay marriage” is mentioned only twice.

So, they spend their time whining about liberal boilerplate but blithely ignore actual conservative issues. Therefore, they are not conservative.

To boil it down into Moldbug’s taxonomy, The American Conservative is simply ex-Optimates who want to defect to the Brahmins.

I’d be the last person to scream “Anti-Semitism”, but simple flat-out hostility to Israel does seem to drive a lot of the discussion over at AmCon. I’m certainly not in favor of us fighting Israel’s battles for them, but AmCon seems to deny them the right to even defend themselves, which is pretty basic.

  6. Will S. says:

AmCon was a better magazine back in its earliest days, in many ways; not least of which was, its consistency in its vision, amongst all its contributors; it truly was paleocon, which it no longer really is. Only Chronicles Magazine and The New American Magazine are consistently paleocon across the board, today, for better and for worse; AmCon certainly isn’t.

That said, AmCon is still an interesting read, IMO. But it isn’t what it once was, for sure.
