Black nationalist manque Ta-Nehisi Coates has banned me again. Why it takes me a whole three minutes to get a new email address and Disqus account!
The question was did Zimmerman use a “racial slur” (more on this important term later) in the 911 call. The post contains a picture of Zimmerman. My posted answer was:
Now that we have a picture of him, can we stop calling him white? /end comment
Coates has been quite reticent on this one. I assume he sees this as building up into a great crescendo, a wave of black rage breaking into a backwash of thoughtful “yes racism is deeply engrained in America, now we see how deep, so all cops have to be black” and he wants to get ahead of the curve. Or maybe he’s smart enough to see Zimmerman really is Hispanic and this will turn into a black-Hispanic confrontation, and he wants to be careful.
What really struck me this time is just how thin-skinned the elites and their minions are. They can’t take any criticism, confrontation, or challenge at all. They get very angry and upset when they encounter any.
It didn’t used to be this way. We have always been told what to think, but the old guard- elite Protestants of the northeast- were more subtle about it. As they moved to marginalize the white working class and bring in NAMs as there preferred political allies in the 60’s, they tended to treat dissent firmly but gently.
Shaming is a powerful tool of social control. Like any tool, or weapon, it has to be used carefully and correctly or it does more harm than good. If you shame someone mildly, they fear further rejection and disapproval, and want to avoid it, and maybe get back in your good graces. If you shame someone harshly, they are humiliated and enraged and become your sworn enemy. Even if they are very weak and can do little or nothing to hurt you this creates problems and should be avoided, except as the matter of a ritual sacrifice of a very small number of people.
Again I want to emphasize that the people who set the system up in the 30’s and 40’s actually knew how to run things. They understood persuasion and propaganda, what was for them a noble lie and what was the truth. They wanted to increase the social power of black people and reduce the power of lower class whites. Racism is a basic defense mechanism of lower class whites, to keep themselves safe and separated from blacks. All people who are not stupid are racists of course, but higher class whites don’t need to actually use this because they aren’t physically close to blacks.
Racism needed to be shamed, but in a fairly benign way, to avoid upsetting too many people. Racism, we were told, was simply a mental error. It was not enlightened or scientific. This ignorance would be gently corrected by education. People who persisted would be written off as regrettably unenlightened and too attached to the ways of the past.
Northern whites could mostly buy this. They didn’t care if they worked with a few blacks, or blacks ate in the same restaurants, or a few blacks lived in their neighborhoods. Southerners had developed a way of coping with blacks by formal segregation, just as northerners had by informal segregation. It’s a testament to the power of the elites in Walter Russell Meade’s “blue model” that this became accepted and legislated in just a few years.
Blacks weren’t really down with this, though. Some were willing to take their bigger share of government cheese and enjoy it, but many used this for open attacks on white. These attacks, however, were mostly managed as the “Incidents” I talked about before. The aggression of blacks was just treated as proof they needed more concessions, and then they would be peaceful.
That didn’t happen. The one place the system has seriously retrenched has been in criminal justice. The weak system of the 60’s and 70’s was replaced in the 80’s and 90’s by the strong system of today. Blacks hate it, but black aggression so enraged the white proles that they had a revolution on their hands.
The shaming has been ongoing, and has gotten stronger rather than weaker. Nothing whites do makes them less guilty or evil to blacks or liberals. The 60’s generation thought they would take over and remove any remnant of the old society. The fact that anyone still disagrees with them enrages them. The children who grew up eagerly taking in all the lessons about “racism” and “injustice” form the modern left. All the old New Deal people are dead, or very old and retired.
Rather than a Protestant model of mild but still smarting rebuke, we have a model of complete evil and filth, the communist idea that anything outside the fold is evil and must be destroyed. Is this Jewish? The Jewish idea of uncleanness seems to be similar. The pre-Jewish ethic of revolutionary violence doesn’t seem to contain it. In any case, it is not gentle, it does not leave you with any hope of being left alone, or getting back into the good graces of those dishing it out.
More people are getting the idea that they are outside, permanently.
P.S. Coates, you are such a coward. You have all the power on your side, but none of the truth. Don’t count on it lasting forever.
