Comic book nerd Ta-Nehisi Coates has been going on about an incident in Florida where a neighborhood watch guy got in a confrontation with a black kid and shot him. From a cursory reading of these posts, which are no doubt biased, it seems the neighborhood watch guy got a little carried away. The first rule of carrying a firearm is discernment and discretion.
I’ve been through Sanford a few times, and it’s like lots of places in Florida- not rich, not too poor, just working-class in an area where the cost of living is low enough that being working-class is not too bad. The critical point here is mentioned in the comments- one of the commenters describes Sanford as 30% black.
The US census map will tell you the racial composition of any area. It’s an important link, save it; check it before you move someplace or even before going to an unfamiliar area, and you will get an idea of the hazard. Looking at the census tracts around Sanford, it seems to be a mixed bag. North and east of the map label “Sanford” are heavily black, south and west less so. I can’t find exactly where the site of the incident- described as the “Retreat at Twin Lakes” condominium complex- is, but the census tract around Twin Lakes (southeast of Interstate 4 and Highway 417) is 17% black. It’s quite possible that blacks from farther east come and cause trouble- the mall just to the north is probably a big draw for young, idle blacks- so there maybe more in the area at any given time than the census number indicates. In any case, while I don’t know where the 30% number comes from, it seems to reflect the area as a whole.
The significance of this is that 30% is the tipping point where black crime tends to get out of control. 30% doesn’t seem like a lot, but blacks seem to become bolder at this point- they have enough numbers to intimidate and dominate. As we saw in Blacks- The Mortal Danger a portion of about this many blacks lead to a crime wave. The Rainier Valley area had had more attacks by groups of blacks on small Asians and a large number of shootings since then.
If the Sanford police aren’t eager to arrest George Zimmerman, they probably aren’t arresting a lot of black punks either. Most robberies and assaults- Zimmerman has been the victim of both- have few or no witnesses, confused witnesses, or especially uncooperative black witnesses. Police often can’t do much- but they often don’t want to do much either. Police officers, remember, are first and foremost government employees selected for their political correctness and mainly interested in drawing a paycheck and a pension. They are probably discouraged from arresting too many blacks. It’s also possible they see a black punk getting what’s coming to him, and aren’t too exercised by it.
If Zimmerman doesn’t get charged by the Sanford police, he will get charged by the Obama/Holder Justice Department, and wish he had been charged by the locals. Of course double jeopardy going out the window in “civil rights” cases, he could easily be charged by both. The only real way to deal with blacks, as things stand now, is avoidance. With a few, you can be careful, but when they reach 30%, you’re in the Black Undertow. Get out.
