The Swedish advertising agency Forsman Bodenfors had the brilliant idea of promoting donations to UNICEF by portraying Santa Claus as a vaguely racist asshole-
Now just who hates Santa? Seriously? Some Jews hate him-there is a movie called “The Hebrew Hammer” where a Jewish superhero must save Hanukah from the evil son of Santa- but hating Santa is pretty twisted.
Gift giving and charity at this time of year are ancient traditions of Europeans. Among the Celts this occurred at Samhain, the genesis of trick-or-treating. In northern Europe it is centered on the winter solstice, or Yule.
The gift-giver was Odin at one time, then as Christianity became more widespread, Saint Nicholas. In Scandinavia it was the Yule Goat- now seen occasionally as a straw figure decoration- and in the 19th century the “jultomte”, or Yule elf, became a popular figure of folklore. The modern Santa Claus- that jolly old elf- comes from the poem “The Night Before Christmas”.
In any case Santa Claus represents the spirit of giving, and Christmas is a time not only to eat and drink with family and friends and exchange gifts, but to help those less fortunate. I always buy toys for Toys for Tots, because I like that a little kid who would otherwise get nothing at Christmas will get a toy and be happy.
It seems to me that Santa Claus- who works all year only to make children happy- and UNICEF would go together like vodka and tonic. But Sweden is run by people who hate their own people, culture and customs and want to destroy them. And so they trash Santa, something only the Grinch would do. What could possibly be lower?
