I can’t think of any other country with an active communist insurgency, I believe it is the last one left. Colombia Reports is a news site on the country, run by a Dutchman with leftist sympathies. Recently they ran an article on the danger of fighting FARC too effectively-
I wrote a detailed response to this, but it wouldn’t post, so I post it here-
A ceasefire was attempted with FARC before. They used the opportunity to strengthen themselves, rather than negotiate for a share of power and change in Colombia. One could reasonably assume they did that because they don’t want a share of power, as representatives of one faction of Colombian society, they want all the power. Stepping out of violence and into civil society is a real option for FARC members- former M-19 member Gustavo Petro is a respected leftist politician. But he is just another politician, he doesn’t exercise the god-like power over the lives of others that the Castros do, and that seems to be what they really want.
There is a mathematic solution to the game of prisoner’s dilemma. First, cooperate; then do what they do. Cooperate if they cooperate, and defect if they defect at each turn. Cooperation has been tried, and FARC has defected. They could make a cooperative move, but they haven’t, so until they show some interest in cooperating, fighting is the correct thing to do.
If nothing else government is a monopoly of violence. A government that can’t protect its people is no government. If the official army can’t defeat the “The People’s” army, then the people will have to fight “The People”. You can call them right-wing fascist terrrorist narcotraficantes but they’ll do it anyway. Uribe had the official army fight “The People’s” army and had the people’s army disband. Colombians in general are a lot happier with doing it this way.
FARC are basically just gangsters, like all other communists of course. That they have some popular support is irrelevant- plenty of people in New York and New Jersey support the Mafia. As Bin Laden says, people will support the strong horse. If they decide to change from rural terrorist tactics to urban terrorist tactics there is nothing to be done but keep fighting.”
To paraphrase the early 70’s tearjerker “Love Story” (as was the constant habit of my favorite reading material in those days, MAD magazine) “being a leftist means never having to say you’re sorry.” A leftist can commit the most cruel, horrendous, and egregious of crimes, but unless he dies, he will eventually be awarded an honored place in society. It’s not fair, and I’m not entirely clear on how it works, but that’s the way it is. A communist you don’t kill is a communist who will have his boot on your neck eventually, if only as a university professor.
